A self lock cake box is a single die-cut sheet. When assembled, it creates a tray with four walls and a lid, all locked together without any adhesive. The locking mechanism uses two types of flaps working together.
The side flaps: On each of the two longer side walls, extended flaps fold inward along the wall’s score line. These flaps extend past the interior of the box and sit against the interior wall surface.
The front extended tabs: On the front panel (and on the lid panel in a lidded configuration), extended tabs fold outward and over the side flaps when the front panel is raised into position. These tabs lock the side flaps in their inward position, preventing the side walls from releasing outward.
The interlock is mechanical: the front tab physically holds the side flap. No glue is bonding the surfaces. No tape is holding the tab in place. The tab-over-flap geometry keeps the corner closed under the carry load.

Each cycle softens and re-hardens the adhesive. Each cycle reduces the bond strength slightly. After enough cycles, the bond releases and the corner opens.

Standard frosting clearance rule: The interior box height should be the fully decorated cake height (including all frosting, toppings, and decorations at their tallest point) plus a minimum of 25mm overhead clearance.
Self lock adjustment: Because the interlocking tab and flap occupy the upper 10 to 15mm of the wall zone on the interior, size the box interior height to the fully decorated cake height plus 35 to 40mm minimum to ensure the frosting clears both the interlock zone and has adequate overhead space when the lid is closed.

Window Die-Cuts: Placement Clear of the Interlock Zone
A window on the front or lid panel of a self lock cake box is one of the most popular options for retail display and delivery presentation. The window placement must clear the interlocking tab zone.
The front extended tab extends from the upper portion of the front panel. A die-cut window on the front panel must be positioned so the clear zone of the window sits below the tab fold line. If the window extends into the tab area, the tab cannot fold cleanly and the interlocking mechanism does not engage.
For most self lock cake box sizes, a front panel window positioned in the lower two-thirds of the front panel height clears the tab zone and provides excellent product visibility from counter height.
For a lid panel window (showing the cake from above when the lid is closed), the window sits in the center of the lid panel away from the fold lines on all four sides. This is the most common configuration for premium self lock cake boxes where the product is displayed through the top.

Food Safety and Grease Resistance for Bakery Applications

For cakes with dry surfaces or non-contact (cake sits on a board, not touching the box walls): standard food-adjacent SBS or uncoated kraft is appropriate.
For rich buttercream, ganache, or oil-based frostings that may contact the box walls or base during carry: specify a grease-resistant coated SBS or PE-coated board. The coating prevents oil and moisture from wicking into the board, which would otherwise soften the wall panels and degrade the interlocking mechanism over a delivery period.
For any self lock cake box going into a warm delivery environment: the mechanical lock is unaffected by heat, but the board itself can soften if moisture from a rich filling saturates uncoated board. How to Assemble a Self Lock Cake Box
Nobody explains the self lock assembly sequence clearly. Here is exactly how it goes together.
Assembling the tray:
- Start with the flat die-cut blank, printed side facing out.
- Fold the two longer side panels upward along their score lines.
- Fold the side flaps inward so they sit against the interior wall surface on each side.
- Fold the front panel upward.
- Fold the front extended tabs over the side flaps. Press firmly until each tab sits flush over its side flap and the corner locks.
- Repeat on the back panel.
Closing the lid: 7. Place the cake in the assembled tray. 8. Bring the lid down over the tray. Fold the lid’s side flaps inward and the lid’s front tabs over them to lock the lid closed in the same sequence as the tray.

Packaging Expert Tip: Load the Cake From Above, Not From the Side
Here is the operational detail that matters most during busy bakery service and that no competitor addresses.
The self lock cake box tray assembles from the flat blank and stands open at the top. This means the cake loads from above, not from the side. Unlike a box where the lid lifts off a pre-loaded tray (the four corner format), the self lock box requires the cake to be placed into the tray before the lid is applied.
For decorated cakes with tall or fragile toppers, this loading direction can present a challenge if the tray walls are tall enough to obstruct the view of the base panel during loading. Size the tray walls to no more than two-thirds the cake height so the packer can see the base and center the cake correctly before the lid goes on.
For tiered cakes with multiple dowel rods and internal supports, confirm that the fully assembled tier fits through the open top of the tray before loading. A tier assembly that exceeds the tray opening dimensions on any axis cannot be loaded from above after the tray is assembled.
