A fence partition is the interlocking egg-crate style that provides support in both directions. A basic cell divider usually just separates with a single wall. Both fence partitions and punch partitions create a multi-directional grid. A punch insert is made from two sets of parallel cardboard strips. The row strips run in one direction. The column strips run perpendicular. At every point where a row strip and a column strip are designed to cross, a notched punch is cut into both strips at that crossing point.
When assembled, the row strip and the column strip slide together at their notched intersections. The punch on each strip engages the punch on the other and the crossing point locks. The result is a grid where every intersection is mechanically locked, not just frictionally held.

Rigid chipboard partitions provide rigid protection for delicate items, are visually appealing, and take up less space than corrugated materials. They have the highest cost compared to other partition types and are best for those looking for a high-end and luxurious feel.
For most glass bottle, cosmetic jar, and candle applications, single-wall E-flute corrugated is the right starting point. Move to B-flute for heavier bottles. Use SBS or chipboard for premium retail applications where the visual appearance of the partition is visible to the end user.
The Foam-at-Cell-Bottom Combination: Enhanced Protection for Polished Surfaces
For products with polished surfaces that could scratch, adding foam inserts at the bottom of each cell gives extra cushioning. This is the hybrid protection system that gives a punch insert the organizational precision of a cardboard grid plus the impact absorption of foam at the base of each cell.

Sizing: The Information We Need to Build a Punch Insert
Buyers consistently underspecify punch inserts and receive inserts that do not fit the products or the box. Here is exactly what we need.
Box interior dimensions: Length, width, and height of the inner box space the partition sits in. The partition width and length must match the box interior exactly (within 1mm) so the partition cannot shift sideways. The partition wall height must equal the box interior height for column strength.
Product dimensions: Outer diameter or footprint of the product at its widest point. The cell interior must be the product footprint plus 2 to 3mm clearance per side. For round products, this is the diameter plus 4 to 6mm for the full cell interior.
Cell count: Number of rows and columns. Total cell count equals rows times columns.
Product weight per cell: Determines the board grade.
Surface sensitivity: Polished, coated, or labeled surfaces that require foam at the cell base.

Packaging Expert Tip: Specify the Slot Depth as Half the Wall Height, Every Time
Here is the specification error that produces a punch insert where the crossed strips do not sit level, and it is completely absent from every competitor page.
The slot depth on each strip must equal exactly half the strip height. Here is why.
When the row strip and the column strip intersect, the row strip’s slot accepts the column strip from above, and the column strip’s slot accepts the row strip from below. Each slot meets the other at the center of the strip height. If the row strip slot is 50mm deep and the column strip slot is 50mm deep, and both strips are 100mm tall, the two slots meet exactly at the 50mm midpoint and the grid sits level.
If the slot depth on one strip is cut to 48mm instead of 50mm, the intersection does not fully engage. The grid sits 2mm proud on one side and 2mm recessed on the other. The top surface of the grid is not level. Products loaded into the cells tilt. The partition does not sit flush against the lid panel, and the column strength is partially lost.
