Custom Four Corner With Display Lid Boxes That Ship Closed and Sell Open
A box that just holds the product is doing the minimum. A four corner with display lid box does two jobs: protects the product in transit with a closed lid, then opens into a branded retail display with the lid standing as a header behind the product tray.
Most boxes end at the opening. This one starts there. When the lid folds back and stands upright, it becomes a vertical display panel at eye level, branded with whatever message drives the purchase at point of sale. The product sits below it in the open tray, fully visible and grab-ready. One box that replaces both a shipper and a shelf talker.
Custom four corner with display lid boxes from Hexa Custom Boxes are built for brands that need the packaging to earn its position on the shelf, not just occupy it.
The Three Lid Configurations and Which One You Actually Need
This is the most important decision in this product category and the one no competitor explains clearly. There are three distinct lid configurations that all go by the name “four corner with display lid,” and each one creates a completely different retail experience.
| Lid Configuration | How It Works | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Fold-back display lid (most common) | Lid is hinged to the back of the tray and folds backward to stand upright as a display header behind the product | Counter POP display, impulse retail, any format where the open box is the display unit |
| Detachable lift-off lid | Lid is a separate piece that removes completely, leaving an open tray for display | Premium gifting, clean two-piece presentation, situations where the lid is kept separately |
| Windowed lid | Lid stays closed with a clear PET window cut into the panel so the product is visible without opening | Sealed retail shelf display, food and bakery where freshness closure matters |
Most brands choosing this box format want the fold-back configuration. It is the one that creates the built-in display header and is the most commercially distinctive feature of this box style. The detachable lid is for premium gifting. The windowed lid is for sealed display.
When you request a quote, tell us which configuration you need. All three use the same four corner tray base. The lid is what differs.
How the Fold-Back Display Lid Works: The Mechanics Nobody Explains
A fold-back display lid is connected to the back wall of the tray by a hinge score. When the box is closed for transit, the lid folds forward over the tray opening and tucks or latches at the front. When the box is opened for display, the lid folds backward along the hinge score and stands upright behind the tray.
The display angle: The lid stands at approximately 90 degrees or slightly past vertical, depending on the hinge score position and the lid panel dimensions. For most retail counter display applications, a lid that stands vertical or slightly angled toward the shopper is the right position. We can spec the hinge score to your preferred display angle before production.
The lid height: The standing lid panel height determines what is visible at eye level above the product in the tray. For a counter display at standard checkout height (around 36 inches from floor), the lid should be tall enough for the brand name and a benefit line to be readable at the customer’s eye level from a standing position, typically 80 to 120mm of lid panel height above the tray wall.
Structural stability: A fold-back lid that is too lightweight flexes and tips at the display angle under shelf airflow or minor bumping. We spec the lid panel board weight and the hinge score depth so the standing lid holds its position through a full display period without needing a prop or support.
How This Box Differs From the Other Display Lid Formats
Hexa offers several display lid box structures. Here is how the four corner with display lid fits within that family so you choose the right one.
| Box Style | Base Construction | Lid Opens To | Best Commercial Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Four Corner With Display Lid (this box) | Pre-glued four corner tray, pop-open assembly | Fold-back standing header behind tray | Counter POP, retail impulse, bakery display |
| Double Wall With Display Lid | Rolled double-thick walls, glue-free lock | Front-facing display backdrop faces shopper | Shelf display, eye-level front-facing branding |
| Auto Bottom With Display Lid | Pre-glued auto-lock base, fastest assembly | Separate lid lifts off | High-volume retail, speed-assembly lines |
| 1-2-3 Bottom Display Lid | Snap-lock base, three-step fold | Separate display lid lifts off | Moderate weight retail, counter display |
Choose the four corner with display lid when you want a fast pop-open tray base, a fold-back standing header above the product, and a single-piece construction that ships flat and builds in seconds. Choose the double wall version when the display panel needs to face the shopper horizontally from a shelf. Choose auto-bottom when packing speed is the priority.
Where Four Corner With Display Lid Boxes Earn Their Keep
| Product and Use Case | Why It Fits | Recommended Material |
|---|---|---|
| Bakery counter display (cookies, brownies, pastry assortments) | Open tray shows product, fold-back lid carries bakery brand | Food-safe SBS or kraft |
| Skincare and cosmetics kits | Open-face display at counter, lid header sells the range | 18 to 20pt SBS |
| Confectionery and gift chocolate sets | Product visible in tray, lid tells the brand story | Food-safe SBS |
| Small electronics accessories | Retail POP display, product visible and grab-ready | 18pt SBS or E-flute |
| Supplement and wellness sample packs | Counter display with compliance copy on lid header | 18 to 20pt SBS |
| Seasonal and promotional sets | Fast setup for in-store display programs | E-flute corrugated |
| Craft and stationery retail | Open display tray with header at counter or shelf | 16 to 18pt SBS |
Designing the Lid Interior as a Display Header
This is the section that determines whether the box does retail work or just holds product, and no competitor develops it.
When the fold-back lid stands upright, its interior surface faces the shopper at eye level. That surface is a display header. It has the customer’s attention before they have picked up the product. It is the first thing they read when approaching the display from walking distance.
Brief it separately from the rest of the box exterior. Here is what works at retail display distance.
Brand name and wordmark: Large, at the top of the standing lid interior. Readable from at least one meter away. This is not the place for a small logo in the corner.
One benefit line: Short, punchy, benefit-led. Not a tagline written for social media, a line that answers the question the shopper has standing in front of the display. “Made with single-origin cocoa.” “24-hour hydration in one step.” “Charges three devices at once.”
A visual element: A product image, a pattern in brand colors, or a seasonal motif that draws the eye from aisle distance. High contrast against the background so it reads clearly even under inconsistent retail lighting.
A price point or QR code (optional): In the lower section of the standing lid where it is within arm’s reach of the customer. Price clarity at point of purchase removes the friction of uncertainty. A QR code links to a product page, a recipe, or a reorder link.
Design the lid interior the way you would brief a shelf talker or a counter card for the same product. That is what it becomes the moment it folds back.
How to Assemble a Four Corner With Display Lid Box
Nobody explains this for this specific configuration. Here is how the fold-back version goes together.
Closing for transit:
- Square up the pre-glued four corner tray base. The corners pop rigid automatically.
- Load the product into the open tray.
- Fold the display lid forward over the tray opening along the hinge score at the back.
- Tuck or latch the front edge of the lid into the front tray wall closure to hold it closed.
Opening for display:
- Release the front lid closure.
- Fold the lid backward along the hinge score.
- Let the lid stand upright at the display angle. It holds its position at the scored angle.
- The product is now visible in the open tray with the branded lid header standing above it.
Total time from closed transit box to open display: under 10 seconds. No tools, no additional hardware.
Food Safety for Bakery and Food Applications
For direct food contact (unwrapped baked goods sitting in the tray or against the tray walls), specify a food-safe PE-coated SBS or PE-lined kraft board. The coating prevents oil and moisture wicking and eliminates any risk of ink or fiber contact with the food. For indirect food contact (products in bags, cups, or wrappers), standard SBS or uncoated kraft is appropriate. For warm display environments, confirm the board spec before ordering as standard SBS softens under prolonged heat.
Board and Material Options
| Material | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 16pt SBS | Light retail products, stationery, short display runs | Cost-effective, good print surface |
| 18pt SBS | Most bakery, cosmetics, and retail display applications | Standard spec for this format |
| 20 to 22pt SBS | Gift sets, heavier items, premium presentation | Stiffer lid panel holds the display angle better |
| Kraft (uncoated) | Natural, artisan, eco-forward brands | Food-compatible options available |
| Food-safe coated SBS | Direct food contact applications | Oil and moisture resistant |
| E-flute corrugated | Heavier products, produce, food service | Best base strength, stackable |
Note on lid panel board weight: the standing lid needs sufficient stiffness to hold its display angle without flexing. For fold-back display lid configurations, 18pt SBS minimum is recommended for the lid panel. Lighter board may require a score-and-prop support if the lid is tall.
Print That Works Closed, Open, and in Between
A four corner with display lid box has three distinct print states: closed for transit, open for display, and the lid exterior viewed from above on a shelf.
- Lid exterior (top surface, box closed): Brand name, logo, and product image for visibility on a shelf or counter when the box is closed.
- Lid interior (vertical header, box open): Benefit-led display brief as above. Different from the lid exterior and briefed separately.
- Four tray outer walls: Brand color and secondary messaging visible from every angle around the display.
- Tray interior walls: Contrasting color or pattern that frames the product visually when viewed from above.
Print finishes available: PMS spot-color matching, full CMYK, Spot UV on the lid exterior and interior, foil stamping for premium counter presence, matte or gloss lamination, food-safe inks for direct contact applications.
Packaging Expert Tip: Match the Lid Height to the Counter Height and the Customer’s Eye
Here is the sizing detail that determines whether the standing lid header actually works as retail communication or disappears below the sightline.
The display lid header needs to be visible to a standing customer approaching the counter from normal retail walking distance, approximately one to two meters. At standard retail counter height of 36 inches from the floor, the top of the standing lid should reach at least 46 to 50 inches from the floor when the box is in display position.
That means the lid panel height above the tray wall should be at least 100 to 150mm for most counter display applications. Shorter lids disappear behind the tray or other products on the counter and the display function is lost.
Before finalizing the dieline, place a mockup of the assembled box in the actual display location at the actual counter height and check the lid visibility from a standing position at one meter. That five-minute check prevents a production run where the display header nobody sees.
